This is a memorable ride along very quiet roads in the splendid mountainous uplands of Powys.

P. and cycled this route during the October half-term break, leaving the cosy and hospitable Neuadd Arms hotel in Llanwrytd Wells at 11:00 and returning after dark at 19:50. The last stretch up the A483 is on a fairly busy, fast through-route and was a bit worrying after dark, but we had taken the precaution of packing reflective waiscoats, rear LED lights and Petzl headtorches. We reckon the distance is around 70km.

I love this ride for its remote feel, and for the absence of traffic; the road was closed for bridge repairs close to Beulah and we only saw one or two vehicles during the whole of the ride until we joined up with the A483 at the end. The autumn colours are spectacular here, and the first five or ten miles of the climbing part of the ride after Beulah are heavily wooded. Glimpsed one or two red kites, and plenty of other wildlife. P. surprised me with his stamina since he didn't complain at all, except a little worriedly on the last stretch of the climb up to the Sugarloaf on the busy road in the dark.
