Janet greets a cow
We were usually at the cottage in the months between November and April, when the nights draw in early and you need a good fire for warmth. The battered old range in the cottage smoked deplorably, and doors had to propped open to just the right degree to get the through draft needed to keep the living room free of smoke. When you went into the bedroom off the living room in winter, the temperature dropped by ten degrees. You could choose to sleep upstairs under the tiles (four beds crammed into an 8' by 6' space over the stairs) as Andy is in the picture here, or downstairs, where the bedding was generally a little drier.
